Allergy Testing

Because of my sinus problems, the doctor that was continuously giving me antibiotics, gave me a referral to see an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist. She immediately ordered allergy testing.

Allergy testing involves having a skin or blood test to determine what substance, or allergen, may trigger an allergic response in a person. I had the Skin Prick Test performed on my arm. This test is done by placing a drop of a solution containing a possible allergen on the skin, and a series of scratches or needle pricks allows the solution to enter the skin. If the skin develops a red, raised itchy area (called a wheal), it usually means that the person is allergic to that allergen.

Almost immediately, I reacted to every allergen my skin was pricked with. So, with the advice of the doctor, I started allergy shots. You have to build up to a maximum dosage of the allergens and once I did, my husband would give me the shots at home. I hated them. Plus, whenever I received the shots I would break out in a rash. I also didn't understand why I was allergic to EVERYTHING. I never had watery eyes or sneezing or any classic allergy symptom, how could I be allergic to everything? I saw another doctor about the CFIDS who was also an ENT doctor and he mentioned that I could of been allergic to an ingredient in the allergy testing solutions. I mentioned that to my regular ENT doctor and she just shrugged it off.
